1957 Volkswagen® Karmann-Bodied Cabriolet

Karmann, the exclusive body manufacturer for Volkswagen®, produced 8,043 Cabriolets in 1957. This Inca Red Cabriolet is all original, including the special order leatherette interior. The car was purchased new on October 22, 1956, and delivered December 18, 1956, in Cologne, under VW’s European Delivery program. It was driven only 171 miles in Europe, then shipped to Charleston, South Carolina. The original owners kept the car at their South Carolina winter home, driving it sparingly. The car was purchased from the original owners’ estate in 1987 with 37,000 original miles on the odometer. All original documentation was included in the sale, including a color photo of the car dated April 13, 1957! The car has been driven less than 50,000 miles.

Herbie Goes Bananas

This is an early 1960s “European model” Beetle from the movie “Herbie Goes Bananas.” Disney converted 26 Volkswagens® for the film. This car is believed to be one of only four Herbies that escaped the crusher. It is a “static, special effects” car. It does not have an engine, but was modified to shake and smoke. In the movie, the car is dragged from the water, shakes itself dry and then starts with a big cloud of black smoke. The car was also used in some simulated driving scenes and at the bull fight. It has been restored to its “Herbie Goes Bananas” condition, with the “muddy” paint pattern and mechanisms to make it shake and smoke. The interior upholstery and sunroof are available from Mid America Motorworks.

Spinning Herbie

This is an authentic, special effects car used in the movie “Herbie Goes Bananas.” The front wheels do not touch the ground. Instead, the car is supported by a small “fifth wheel” mounted between, and slightly to the rear, of the normal front wheels. This fifth wheel allows Herbie to spin in tight turns. Spinning Herbie is driven from the rear of the car. A complex chain and linkage mechanism moves the normal front wheels and the front steering wheel as the rear steering wheel is turned to maintain the illusion of Herbie driving himself.

Modified Street Racer Herbie

This air-cooled Volkswagen was one of the Herbie cars seen in the recent Disney movie, “Herbie Fully Loaded.” It is a modified street racer with a custom interior and sound system. This is one of the first “Herbie Fully Loaded” cars Disney released for sale. Mid America Motorworks was given the opportunity to acquire this Herbie because Mid America Motorworks was the primary Volkswagen parts supplier for the movie.

1967 Patina Volkswagen Beetle

A group of Mid America Motorworks employees has gained hands-on experience with this 1967 Volkswagen Beetle. Affectionately called the Patina Bug Project, the upgrade and slight modification utilized VW parts and accessories available through Mid America Motorworks. When the car arrived from California at Mid America Motorworks’ corporate campus in Effingham, Ill., it had a patina green paint finish, inspiring its name. Now that it is complete, the Patina Bug will serve as a company vehicle and a test subject for new and existing products available from Mid America Motorworks.

1977 Super Beetle Convertible

The 1977 Super Beetle Convertible recently became the newest addition to the MY Garage Museum collection. The original owner worked for Volkswagen of America and purchased the car after it completed EPA emission certification. This car features several European options not available in the United States, making it a rare find. Unique features include a black exterior with tan top and interior, chrome trim rings, European Hella H4 headlights and a European market sport steering wheel never offered in the U.S.
